Overheating? Why Your HVAC System Might Be Working Too Hard

Is your HVAC system constantly running, only to shut off suddenly? You might be dealing with an overheating issue!

Overheating is a common problem with HVAC Systems, especially during those peak summer days when the system has to work extra hard.

Let’s find out why your HVAC system might be overworking and what you can do to help it cool down.

1. Dirty Condenser Coils

Your outdoor unit, or condenser, holds coils that release heat from your home’s air into the outside environment.

When these coils get covered in dust or grime, they can’t let off enough heat, causing your HVAC system to work harder and potentially overheat.

Cleaning these coils regularly helps your system stay efficient and prevents it from overworking.

2. An Aging HVAC System

Like most things, HVAC systems have a lifespan. If yours is over 15 years old, it may lack the efficiency of newer models and could be prone to overheating. Older systems are also more likely to have worn-out parts, causing the system to struggle to keep up. If you’re constantly experiencing issues, it might be time to consider an upgrade.

3. Low Refrigerant Levels

Refrigerant is essential to cool your home, so if levels are low, your system has to work overtime to maintain your desired temperature.

This extra strain can lead to overheating. If you notice your AC struggling, or if your home isn’t staying cool, a refrigerant check may reveal that a top-off or fix is needed.

4. Clogged Air Filters

Your HVAC system’s air filter blocks dust and debris from entering the unit, but over time, these filters can get clogged.

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, forcing your HVAC to work harder to pull in air. The extra workload can cause it to overheat or even shut down.

Checking and cleaning or changing your filter every month is an easy way to keep your system happy and healthy!
